We're Working on Something Big | Culture/ | Friday 07-31-2009
We interrupt your usual programming to bring you this message. Like your favorite suspender-wearing environmental science professor, we're going on sabbatical. Ours isn't to write a thesis on sustainable agriculture (though we could!) or take a safari and document the impact of eco-tourism (though we'd love to!) Nope, instead we'll be working harder than ever behind the scenes to continue to build businesses that you love. Here's a glimpse of what's in store: OZOcar and OZOwater are launching new online initiatives which will be integrated with OZOlife to make it bigger, better, and more dynamic. In the meantime, wish us luck and we'll be in touch soon with more info on how you can hear from us again regularly.

The Wheel World

 Baby Planet Strollers | Travel/ | Wednesday 11-19-2008
As much as we deplore plastic, there's a reason why it's used in strollers and car seats: It's what you want protecting your baby in case of an accident. Recycled plastic won't work (not durable enough) so the next best thing is the recyclable stroller from Baby Planet, which collects its used products and breaks them down for recycling. It's not a bad second life for something stylish like the Max Traveler three-wheeled stroller.

 Solio Cell Phone Charger | Design/ | Tuesday 11-18-2008
There's nothing new about solar cell phone chargers, but the Solio Hybrid 1000 just might become the first to break into the mainstream market. The design couldn't be simpler: Leave the Solio in a sunny place during the day, then let your phone charge overnight or while on the go. It works its magic on just about any device using a lithium ion battery (iPhones, BlackBerries, digital cameras) and is a great solution for portable back-up power. Could it be time to get your PDA off the grid?

ART: ozo_bites_274.jpg

Bek and Call

 Beklina Online Boutique | Style/ | Monday 11-17-2008
Amidst a virtual sea of cluttered ecommerce clothing sites, Beklina.com is clean, simple, and well-edited — and, truth be told, reeled us in before we realized it was green. Based out of Northern California, the online boutique pulls from only the very best brands from around the globe — and offsets its shipping through the Carbon Fund. Owner Angelina Rennell launched the site in 2006 and peruses the New York scene (virtually, of course) via hundreds of blogs (which she's keeping under wraps) to find pieces that fit her fashion standards. Fall items are trickling in; we especially love the Ashley Watson purses and Stewart+Brown cuff dress (and let's throw in these hand-printed Mociun fabrics for good measure).

Greek to You

 Crete's Culinary Sanctuaries | Culture/ | Friday 11-14-2008
Some people eat to live. Others live to eat. And the latter camp tends to make excellent travel partners. (The buddy who greeted us in Barcelona with a pastry in each hand comes to mind.) So join like-minded globetrotters on Crete’s Culinary Sanctuaries, a multiple award-winning series of cooking class adventures that focus on the Greek island’s sustainable organic agriculture and traditional cuisine. The just-announced 2009 schedule includes everything from touring organic olive oil factories to meeting fishermen to creating as fresh-as-can-be feasts of your own — all with the worthy goal of honoring Crete’s rural agriculture, its natural beauty, and your appetite.

Farm Team

Blue Hill at Stone Barns | Food/ | Thursday 11-13-2008
Farm to table may be his maxim, but James Beard-awarded chef Dan Barber of Blue Hill did it table to farm — and back again. With support from David Rockefeller, the Chez Panisse and Bouley-trained chef started harvesting produce year round at Stone Barns in 2004. Shortly thereafter, he opened Blue Hill at Stone Barns, a Pocantico Hills outpost of his beloved Greenwich Village restaurant, where the food travels tens — not thousands — of miles to the plate. Still haven't been? Make reservations this summer, when Barber scratches the entire menu in lieu of a "farmer's feast" with the best of the season.

Super Soaker

 Iceland's Blue Lagoon Spa | Travel/ | Wednesday 11-12-2008
Quick, list five facts about Iceland. Stumped? We were too, until we learned the volcanic island is one of the most earth-friendly places in the world, thanks in large part to the volcanic island’s abundant supply of clean energy. Even better, you can submerge yourself in the country’s power source — literally — at Blue Lagoon Spa, a spectacular geothermal mineral pool full of milky white silica mud. Soak in the moisturizing steaming waters (which, randomly, are a miracle cure for psoriasis), order an in-water massage treatment, then melt at the zen-like hotel. You’ll never confuse the place with Greenland again.

Cassette Piece

 Marcella Foschi Recycled Wallets | Design/ | Tuesday 11-11-2008
For the John Hughes generation, it’s tough to find a relic that inspires more nostalgia than the cassette tape — receptacle of painstakingly constructed mixes, early musical taste, and plenty of teen angst. So we couldn’t help but smile when we discovered these creative cassette tape wallets, made by Italian designer Marcella Foschi. Each wallet saves an old tape from the landfill, and is therefore a true original. Which of course makes them much like the mixes made for many a first crush.

 Peaceful Farm Getaways | Style/ | Monday 11-10-2008
Our wholesome, restful favorites are Vermont's Liberty Hill Farm, Texas's Knolle Farm & Ranch, and Northern California's Philo Apple Ranch. We especially like the off the grid hospitality at North Carolina's Maverick Farms, where you can barter for a room in the 125-year-old farmhouse.
Our wholesome, restful favorites are Vermont's Liberty Hill Farm, Texas's Knolle Farm & Ranch, and Northern California's Philo Apple Ranch.
Collar Me Happy

 Green Jobs Day | Culture/ | Friday 11-07-2008
At a recent panel talk, even pioneer chef Alice Waters was upstaged by activist Van Jones — whose call for green economic development in urban areas had the audience inspired. It’s tough to argue with his reasoning: Turn blue-collar jobs into “green” collar jobs, provide training, alleviate social inequalities and environmental destruction with a one-two punch. Intrigued? Gear up for Green Jobs Day on September 27 — a national series of concerts, poetry readings, and gatherings meant to jumpstart conversation about a new economy of eco-friendly jobs. Note: The movement is charmingly grassroots so rally everyone in your PDA, from farmers to chefs to engineers.
