Eco-friendly living and aesthetics don’t have to be mutually exclusive. Nobody knows this better than Victoria Everman — life-long model, crafter, and well-known green blogger — who keeps track of product and style developments via her SF-based site, Victoria-e. Everman tipped us off to her favorite green denim line and explains why she’s so over Spaghettio's.
What's your not-so-green guilty pleasure?
Watching my boyfriend play video games. I know most of the systems aren't very energy efficient.
What was your green turning point?
"Pinching pennies" was a daily occurrence [growing up in small town Indiana], which also often involved being eco-conscious … It was easy to forget my childhood when all I wanted was to grow up [but] in 2004, it all started coming back to me. Green living is the only thing that felt natural to me, so I began to investigate how I could make a living by living green.
What has been your biggest lifestyle change?
My diet. I grew up on Cheerios and boxed mac and cheese; now I'm eating organic and local food, high fiber cereal, and blending my own smoothies … Spaghettio's just don't taste as good as they did when I was 6.
"I am constantly disturbed by the untested chemicals in cosmetics."
Who is your green superhero?
My grandmother: intelligent beyond her years, always crafty, can re-use anything, and the best cook I've ever met. I'm a fan of all the work that [journalist] Simran Sethi is doing as well; she is a constant inspiration personally and professionally.
What keeps you up at night?
The destruction of our food supply and historical, edible culture. Secondly, I am constantly disturbed by the untested chemicals in cosmetics.
What's your favorite eco item in your closet?
My Del Forte high-waisted organic cotton jeans and stylish T-shirts from Twice Shy … [Del Forte designer] Tierra Forte has created an entire line that makes me feel sexy, stylish, and sustainable.
What's your little green secret?
I wash all of my dishes by hand — but only out of necessity. I also use cereal boxes for bookmarks, walk or take public transportation everywhere, and open my windows daily to let in fresh air.
What's on your recommended reading list?
I adore Ode Magazine. It is not all about green living, but it does give me hope with each issue I read. I also recommend Green Yoga and Exposed. (I'll be posting reviews of both books soon.)
"I'm longing for another pair of Del Fortes."
If you could snap your fingers and create a green product or service that doesn't exist yet, what would it be?
Solar power for every single human alive.
What's on your wish list?
I'd love to remove the government subsidies for nuclear power and boost ones for organic, local food. Personally, I'm longing for another pair of Del Fortes. I also live in Stewart+Brown's Lengthened Tees, so more of those would be delightful.
