We’ve been fans of Austin artist/designer Alyson Fox’s minimalist, arty aesthetic since her sustainable line, A Small Collection, debuted last spring. Since we can’t wait to get our hands on her upcoming collaboration with Caitlin Mociun (another fave), Fox kindly agreed to a chat in order to help tide us over.
What keeps you up at night?
Where all the trash is going. It freaks me out.
What was your green turning point?
When I stared a design side to my fine art. I wanted to make the most impact visually with the least impact on the environment. For example, I started with a small clothing line and instead of making a look book of the garments, I made short videos of all the pieces on my website. Saving some ink and trees. From there it trickled into my personal life.
What's on your recommended reading list?
Actual Air by David Berman.
What's something you hope to pass down to your children (and children's children)?
My wedding dress. (We are tying the knot Nov 2.) It is being made from a WWII emergency jump silk parachute, a vintage slip, and a vintage camisole.
What's your little green secret?
I reuse almost all of my tea bags at night when I wash my face. I use them as a little buffer with my soap. I get a little exfoliation and antioxidants!
What are your favorite eco items in your closet?
A Mociun dress and leggings(I adore her prints) and a grey vintage blazer that I wear with jeans.
"Instead of making a lookbook ... I made short videos."
If you could snap your fingers and create a green product or service that doesn't exist yet, what would it be?
A biodegradable shower curtain liner. For some reason, that was the first thing that popped into my head.
If you had five minutes in the Oval Office, what would you say?
I'm afraid it would be mostly cuss words, which I can't write here. I would definitely stress that there is indeed something called Global Warming taking place and that we definitely need to take action.
What's on your wish list?
Making a rule where there would be no more trees used for junk mail (credit card offers, etc.) I would [also] like to see more cars that get better mileage.
"She will not use styrofoam. Ever."
Who is your green superhero?
My friend Sarah Blanchard … really practices what she preaches. She owns a furniture store with her mom in Austin called Home girls that gives everything a second chance. Almost everything in her house is green and she will balance large piles of goods in her hands if she forgets her tote bag. Oh, and she always asks for foil at a restaurant to take her leftovers home in. She will not use Styrofoam. Ever.
