Balancing a conscientious lifestyle with the demands of celebrity is tricky, but Gwyneth Paltrow tries to live up to the example of her mother, who to this day makes her rinse and reuse her Ziplocs.

How is your family green?
My mother is by far the greenest person in my family. She started curbside recycling in Santa Monica in the 1970s, and she was always turning out lights, making us conscious about conservation. When we were little we were going to demonstrations, like for Heal the Bay. Now my mother has us washing out Ziploc bags and reusing them. We’re fanatic about it.

"We've totally eradicated plastic bottles from our house."

How is your home green?
We’ve totally eradicated plastic bottles from our house. We installed a water filtration system, and now we keep the water in these old-looking bottles with cork and glass stoppers we bought from Ikea. There’s one by every bed.

"I'm not on an environmental high horse."

How is your transport green?
I have a Prius, and I love it. It’s our London car, and it’s great for the city. But I’m not on an environmental high horse. I have kids and luggage, and sometimes I need something bigger. Once I was in a Yukon that ran on biodiesel and you could not tell the difference. I researched doing it in New York, but there’s no place within a 25 mile radius of our home to get biofuel.

How is your health green?
We use all organic dishwashing stuff and soaps and detergents. When I had kids I got really vigilant about it because I didn’t want all those chemicals around. We use all natural shampoos, and there’s a lot of Tom’s of Maine in the house.
