Ger-rrrreat!
Three Camel Lodge
We think of New York as a transient city. But it’s nothing compared to Mongolia. 30 percent of the country’s population (that’s 2.9 million people) is considered nomadic. And that is reflected throughout the culture. To get a taste, one only has to stay at Three Camel Lodge in the Gobi Desert. The lodge is made of 10 traditional gers, built of latticed wood draped with felt and canvas, meticulously decorated with handmade Mongolian furniture and tapestries. Camels are available for expeditions. But, there's plenty to see on foot, just around the site — dinosaur fossils, petroglyphs, dance and music performances. Plus there's the organic, traditional Mongolian restaurant and cleverly-named Thirsty Camel Bar that you don't want to miss. If all of Mongolia were this well equipped, maybe more people would stay put.
