The Swiss resort town of Zermatt has a crisp, clear view of the Alps that it intends on keeping. With a ban on combustion-engine automobiles, the preferred transportation methods include: electric buses and taxis, bikes, horse-drawn sleighs, and (for the extremely old-school) feet. An environmental-planning group helps preserve the snow-capped town through an erosion monitoring program, a watchdog for new construction projects, a reforestation initiative, and educational materials for skiers. Sustainable skiing? Now that is a breath of fresh air.
