Ladies Rising

Hot Bread Kitchen

Sometimes, you have to break bread to break new ground. Jessamyn Waldman did just that with immigrant women in New York City. At her Hot Bread Kitchen, female employees from around the world knead local, organic ingredients into ethnically-diverse breads. The results: shared traditions, women walking away with marketable skills, and delicious treats like Mexican tortillas, Iranian lavash, Ghanaian kenkey bread, Punjabi allo parantha, and Yemeni Jewish lahoch flatbread. Currently, the delectable doughs are available at a number of shops and farmers’ markets in the New York City area but the goal is to have a retail space that will also function as an ESL classroom. We will gladly break our low-carb diets for this one.
